sargraf added me to her friendslist. Most of the locked Mirage posts were of DJ links that are now broken but what I really was greedy for was her Mirage meta. She does a multipart review of Book 20 that makes me appreciate it even more and touches on some things I didn't notice at first specifically Naoe's lack of mourning for Chiaki. Now, sargraf is a big Chiaki fan and was touched by Kagetora's angst regarding his apparent death but Naoe's reaction was basically to look at Nagahide as the person chiefly taking care of Kagetora during Naoe's absence which infuriated her and I can see why.

Nagahide in the past that we've seen appears to have been a good friend to Naoe; blowing up at Takaya on Naoe's behalf during Book 6/episode 8, expressing sympathy for Naoe at the end of Book 2/episode 6, telling Kagetora in Book 10 that Naoe's suffering was unhealthy for his soul to the point where his soul migh perish. In fact I've been under the impresstion that Nagahide was on Naoe's "side" and they were pretty good friends but think about it; when Nagahide abandoned the Yashashuu during Kagetora's abscence he had to have known what kind of mental state Naoe was in with Kagetora missing, perhaps dead. For that matter he knew that Irobe was stuck having to hold things together. Where was he? Gone. And he only returned when Kousaka tracked him down and told him about Kagetora's return and dropped some hints about Yuzuru. Yep, great friend.

Oh, don't get me wrong I actually like Nagahide alot and can certainly see why he's popular with fans. He's smart, good looking, has his share of badass moments and gets the snarky oneliners. His frustration with the OTP often mirrors the readers; particularyly, for me at least, his frustration with Kagetora's second bout of memory sealing. Nagahide however appears to be ignorant most of the time of the deeper issues in Naoe and Kagetora's relationship though I'm sure he thinks he knows everything. Like the other Yashashuu he doesn't know about anything about Kagetora's history with sexual assault a great deal of which came at Naoe's hands. He has no inkling about Naoe's winner/loser issues or Takaya's abandonment issues because frankly he's the last person you would confide in about that. So Nagahide's view pretty much seems to be that if Kagetora had just shut up and bent over for Naoe everything would have been fine.

My opinion is that Nagahide is pretty dumb himself regarding emotional attachments; outside of the Yashashuu he doesn't seem to have any. No friends like Yuzuru, no siblings like Miya and certainly no lovers like Shintaro. Or Minako. Naoe knew that Kagetora needed Minako but IMO Nagahide thought that Kagetora should have just cut her loose and forget about the outsider, or for that matter any outsider. During the Karin arc Nagahide's attitude seems to change; he sees how much pressure Kagetora's under and how he actually does actively try to be the strong leader that other people want and need and I think this is because Naoe and Irobe are gone and now Nagahide is getting a better look at Kagetora. Added to this is the shadow Uesugi backstabbing Kagetora which clearly angered Nagahide. Before there seemed to be a certain detachment about Nagahide but with Irobe no longer there to be peacemaker and do the emotional heavy lifting he found himself getting closer, caring more until that fateful day when he shields Kagetora from the hakonha much as Kagetora did himself thirty years ago.

I guess what I'm saying is that while Nagahide certainly proved himself as a friend to Kagetora and then some ....it took him a while to get there, and it doesn't neccessarily make him the kami of friendship.

I don't know if any of y'all have seen the new ED that's come out with this latest episode. I watched it on Youtube and I just about died.

Why? *bobbles and grooves* the beat man.. AND KANYE. ... dont ask me why I find that man Cute beyond all reason. ...do I have jungle fever or something? what the shit? still... NICE song :D

Dude. They're called fake memories for a reason. Because they're fake. Fabricated. Spun out from thin air. Not real. By extension, any and all emotions that directly result from said memories are also fake -- not in the sense that you don't really feel them, but in the sense that you were manipulated to feel them because of the implanted memories.

It's lovely and all that he's blue-eyed and adorable and terribly, appallingly heroic, but he's also terribly, appallingly dumb.

(And what kind of idiot lets himself get stuck in a flower pod for a year at the mercy of the person who screwed his brain over in the first place? How is this kid still alive?)
