1. Streetcar by Funeral For A Friend.  This is one of those emo bands whose songs often seem flat and generic to me, but I really love this tune.  It's got such a catchy and sad chorus hook that I can't stop playing (and singing) it.

2. Salty Eyes by The Matches.  I just discovered these guys, and they have a unique sound and a great theatricality to them. 

3. Ghost of York by As Tall As Lions.   I jut got this album this week and it's fantastic.  Beautiful stuff.

4.  The City That Reads by The Graduate.  More emo, simple, yet good.  There is also a sweet acoustic version on their free EP available from AbsolutePunk.net. Also, note that this is not a download but a link to the song on thesixtyone, which you all should check out as it's how I found half of these songs in the first place.

5. Ode to LRC by Band of Horses.  I almost got to see these guys play in January but missed the boat on getting tix in time.  They're an amazing band and if you haven't heard them yet, check them out.

6. Delilah by The Dresden Dolls. This is one of my go-to songs when I'm down.  So much better than that other song about Delilah that's been all over the airwaves for the past year. 

7.  About Last Night by The Mascara Story.  I swear this band would not have broken up if their name weren't so godawful stupid.  Great upbeat punk-pop fuzz.

8. The Light by The Album Leaf.  Every once in awhile an album will have an opening track that just catches you off your guard with its sheer beauty.  This is one of those.  Since it has no words, I throw it in as an eighth song for free.  :D

1.  I have very vivid and fantastical dreams.  They rarely bear any resemblance to reality.  Some recurring themes are flying, being hunted, and close encounters with whales.

2.  With food, I go through phases where I always order the same thing at a particular restaurant until I get sick of it.  I’ll go through a latte phase, a chai phase, and an Americano phase, or a burrito phase, a tamale phase, and a tostada phase.  These can last for several months.

3.  I can remember all my Halloween costumes, in order, since I was a year old.

4.  I really can't understand people who can be reading more than one novel at a time. Actually I just suck at multitasking in general.

5. My favorite colors are red, black, white, and blue. Uchiha colors. I also really like wearing stripes and stars.  As a result, I often assemble outfits that look way more patriotic than I intended.

6.  Every day before I go to bed, I make a list, hour by hour, of everything I plan to do the next day.  Sometimes I write  the list down two or three times, in different places, recite it over and over in my head as I fade into sleep, and write it again when I wake up.  If I don’t do this, I get deeply anxious.

7. I absolutely cannot fall asleep without applying chapstick, even if I haven't needed to all day.

I spent yesterday afternoon and last night with my aunt, who lives in Lynnfield.  She has a new house and it's absolutely beautiful, and I got to meet her dog for the first time.  It really, really made me miss my dog, but it was so much fun.  We had lobster, champagne, and chocolate cake made with this delicious African liqueur called Amarula.  Then it snowed in the morning while we were walking Jesse, sweet light snow with huge, perfect, six-pointed flakes.  It was really refreshing and rejuvenating. I think my aunt is the most like me of anyone in my family, in some ways.  

Included here are a year-end meme and a shipping meme.  The new year meme made me realize how HUGE 2007 was for me.  It was the biggest year of my life since 1999.

I'm not sure that the stated reasons are the real reasons why am I like Sasuke, which I've spent way too much time rambling about, but alright.  Angsty and popular (finally) is probably true.  And apparently I'm good looking?  News to me.

I went shopping with Peter today.  I haven't been spending enough time with him and I had forgotten how fun he was.  He gets so excited about going to Abercrombie (they don't have it in England), which makes me roll my eyes but he's too adorable about it to hold it against him.  I got some little things for my parents as well as the most recent Bayside CD for myself.  They're coming to Cambridge next week and I'd like to go, but I might not just because the week is already so loaded down with shows.  On Tuesday I'm probably going to see Cold War Kids, Spoon, and Against Me! with Chris and Giorgio, and on Sunday Guy and I are driving to Lowell to see Brand New.  Phew.  I'm excited, but also getting a little stressed. 

In school I'm starting a new project!  I'm going to be doing stable isotope analysis on a collection of Native American bones from Florida, to see how they compare with an earlier population from a nearby site.  We're looking at diet and subsistence patterns over time. I've never done this type of analysis before, since I've only worked with ceramics, not bones, but this project is kind of a race against time, since our museum will probably have to return all our Native American skeletal material when the new NAGRPA amendment goes through January 14.  I'm the only one in lab without a project now, and its straightforward nature should make it a good training project for me.  The idea of learning lab skills finally has gotten me a little more excited about school.

But damn, is it cold.

Also, other things.  I've been doing so much better this whole week,  though I still have really bad mood swings as per usual.  I got really really miserable quite suddenly early in the afternoon, but instead of doing anything harmful I found a nice quiet bench outside to sit on and just watch the fall leaves until I felt better. Then my friends Peter and Ben took me out to the river where the huge rowing event, Head of the Charles, was going on.  We sat out on the grass and watched the boats and geese go by.  There were so many people, and all these food stands, and the weather was perfect.  I felt really good about myself that I was able to take myself from a really nasty dangerous place to a good place by spending time outside with trees and friends instead of alone in my room with food and sharp objects and schoolwork I'm not really doing.  I'm proud of myself.  I don't think I've said that in a really long time.  It makes me feel like it might not always have to be this hard.

It's been a rough week, as some of you know, but I'm doing a lot better. I talked to Jenny today and we're doing fine, as friends, about as close to normal as could be, which I'm infinitely thankful for as her friendship is the best thing in my life.  However, I'm still having the same kinds of sudden panic and general lack of enthusiasm for life.  More posting on that later.I'm going to talk about maybe getting on some anti-depressant/anti-anxiety meds, at last.

This is my new favorite place!  They have wine-and-chocolate pairings which are just exquisite.  WINE AND CHOCOLATE!  My OTP favorite pairing was a chili pepper and cinnamon chocolate with a pinot noir.   It was the closest thing to a food orgasm I've ever had.  The only downside is the price. >>

I can't wait to move to Cambridge and scout out all the awesome places there.   I think the secret to my enjoying grad school will be getting OUT of school more and into the real world for fun.  Seriously.  I've been thinking about the academic career I've been nitching about, and am realizing it's actually not so bad.  You don't have to wear a suit.  You are surrounded by smart, bascially geeky and/or artsy people instead of the business equivalent of frat boys.  Not a bad deal.

4. For some reason, every band I want to see is playing in Boston in the summer and California in the fall.  WHY can't it be the other way around?  Gah.

1. "Picture of Success" - Rilo Kiley. I listened to this song a lot right around graduation and I'm still into it. The lyrics meant a lot to me because to me, they were about being unsure what you wanted to do, where you wanted to be. It even has California in it. It definitely goes on my list of personal theme songs, it there's a meme like that anywhere.

2. "Australia" - The Shins. This song makes me really happy. I love how bright and shiny it sounds. This band has a real talent for melody. The entire album, with the wonderfully awkward title "Wincing the Night Away," is just fantastic.

3. "Blues Run the Game" - Simon and Garfunkel. I'm learning how to play acoustic guitar right now, and I play this a lot. The lyrics are sad, but somehow I find it to be kind of a fun song to play and sing anyway.

4. "Roseability" - Idlewild. This song is made of nonsense. But it's so. Damn. CATCHY!! It will never get out of my head.

5. "It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A Deathwish" - My Chemical Romance. I will not stop shamelessly supporting this band. This song is really motivational for me, and on several recent occasions listening to it has stopped me from doing stupid things. It's so triumphant at the end: "This hole you put me in wasn't deep enough and I'm coming out right now" ..."I lost my fear of falling"... it's kind of a we-shall-overcome song.

6. "As God And Everest" - Pop Unknown. I'm a sucker for songs that go from quiet to loud, especially those that make me feel like I'm soaring. I'm pretty sure this song is a metaphor saying that climbing Mount Everest is like finding God...it's possible to attain them, but few do, and most of the people who seek to do so are insane? I don't know how I feel about that, but I know I love the way this song sounds and feels. ^_^

7. "Classic Cars" - Bright Eyes. This is one of the more country-ish songs off the new "Cassadaga" album, and I'm not a big country fan, but I adore this. The harmonies make me really happy. Conor Oberst writes the best lyrics. Once again, sad story, but charming -- he paints her front door before he leaves her. So cute!

Re: yesterday's post, I've decided NOT to make a separate journal for my personal stuff.  I really like having one journal for one me.  ^_^

1. My username is joyinthedance which I lifted from Lloyd Alexander's novel The Arkadians.  The female co-protagonist/love interest is named Joy-in-the-Dance. I haven't read that book in years, and although I liked the character, it was her name that stuck with me more than anything else.  Dancing is one thing that always brings me joy, and no matter how down we get in our daily lives, we can always find joy in the "dance" -- the spontaneous, physical, musical moments of our lives.  </cheesy>

2. My journal is titled Joy in the Dance because it somehow never occurred to me to call it anything else.  Haha, who's creative now?  ><;  But, the menu titles say "Easy to burn, harder to shine," based on lyrics from a song I wrote myself.  So there.  That makes up for the boring title?  Maybe?

3. My subtitle is "Watching the Flashbacks Intertwine" from the song "Falling Away With You" by Muse.  One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands, and a TOTAL NaruSasu anthem (see icon).  I think it also fits the journal because (a) I write about anime series which are SO chock-full of flashbacks that I sometimes feel that's all I'm watching, and (b) journal writing itself IS an exercise in flashbacks.

I also have a massive quote in the sidebar from Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel.  I love that quote.  I first read it in high school and I always find myself going back to those lines when I get emo.

4. My friends page is titled "All My Friends And Lovers" from the Beatles' "In My Life."  'Nuff said. 

5. My current default userpic is Suigetsu winking and sipping his sippy cup because I love Suigetsu, and this gesture captures him perfectly.  I also really like the coloring of the icon.  I only switched a few days ago from one of L saying "food?" with an adorable look on his face.  I like changing things up, but I always favor the bright over the angsty for default.

I have been SO busy since finals ended!  So much for writing time.  Tracy and I went shopping in town yesterday, bought stuff, then went to a party in our hot new clothes.  I locked myself out of my room and ended up sleeping on her couch.  ><  Then today we took the bus to the mall and shopped all afternoon.  Maybe I'll post some pictures soon. ^_^

I'm furiously throwing together a term paper, so I'm behind again on the flist, but I'll get there soon! In the meantime I had to answer these long overdue MEMES, stolen from EVERYONE.

MEME #1: The Golden Compass!

When I first saw the "fox daemon" I thought of Naruto immediately! ^_^ Apparently it means I'm modest, solitary, spontaneous, responsible, and proud. I am pretty excited about this movie by the way. The first book is by far my favorite of the three. I’m not sure they will be able to pull off the third one, which is a little too allegorical for my tastes and would probably offend a lot of the Christian right – at least, if it stays true to Pullman’s intent. Hm.

Because we all break down and take them eventually.  I really think this is the most overused and overabused label ever, but the Internets think that I am EMO. *sigh*


How can I be emo if my name is Joy? *confused* (But but but - HOW MUCH DOES THIS SUCK?? I might not get to see my beloved MCR and Muse on Tuesday because the concert might be canceled! DDD: Some of the band and crew got food poisoning last week and they canceled a TON of shows. I thought it would be okay because they played at Bamboozle Saturday night, but then they canceled tonight's concert! The tour is basically on hold I'm so nervous...I hope they're better by Tuesday!! *angst angst angst*)....okay, maybe I'm a little bit emo. >.<

Harrison Ford: I've been crushing on fictional men since I was old enough to have a hormone, and Han Solo and Indiana Jones were two of the first. That they were played by a sinlge actor mad me more convinced that H. Fo and I were meant to be. It didn't really register that he was a good nine years older than my father. I just love the way he delivers those snarky lines. I STILL laugh in Star Wars when Han does the whole "we're all fine, here, now...how are you?...*shoots microphone* - Boring conversation anyway." Seriously, Harrison MADE that movie. He may have been supplanted by Johnny Depp as The Man I Would Sleep With Without Asking Any Questions, but I still love him. And I'm going to be an archaeologist just like him. I mean, like Indy. ;)

Piano: This is actually more interesting than it sounds. I write my own piano music, most of which is 100% improvised and sounds like a movie soundtrack. I also occasionally write actual songs and secretly want to be the next Tori Amos. You can request any song that I am familiar with, and I will figure out how to play it in about two minutes. I have a great ear for harmony. But here's the catch - I can't really actually read music or play in anything other than C major and A minor. I started piano lessons at 7 and quit at 13, like everybody else. After I quit, I quickly unlearned everything I'd been taught. So people hear me playing and think "WOW that's great -- will you play this sonata?" and I have to explain that there are too many notes on the page for my brain to process. ><

World domination: This requires explanation? ;) 2025. Prepare yourselves.

"Kind of a big deal": Oh, the mileage that silly quote from Anchorman has gotten on the intrawebs. Byakuya and Renji…hands down, hottest captain/vice-captain team in Bleach. No other comes close. Byakuya’s a big deal, noble birth and all. Renji’s a big deal, being the most badass person ever and also the only real vice captain with bankai (Ikkaku notwithstanding). Both of them in the same bed division? A big fucking deal, that’s what. I chose the picture from when they came down to the living world to take Rukia back, because they were so incredibly intimidating and awesome then, when both of them were still "bad guys" as far as Ichigo was concerned. I love them.

Pringles Cat! This gets the honor of being one of two non-anime icons I have, because it’s just that cute. It was made by khitie_ethrin  , who made a whole bunch of cat icons one time, and I just couldn't resist. Who can resist the cute in a can? I love cats, and how they defy physics. I want a cat so badly, but my travel-heavy lifestyle won’t permit it for quite some time. Unless I can smuggle my cat into Peru in a Pringles can and carry him around while I’m tomb raiding. I also love dogs. I don’t believe in the dog person/cat person dichotomy. It’s a myth. I’m a dog-and-cat person.



Three cheers for sweet revenge! So this was originally much bigger - I turned Sai into Itachi on the 347 pron page. Then
bakkhos   wanted an icon , so I made it, and I made it move. That was so much fun. XD All Uchihacest fans know that Sasuke’s dream is to top Itachi. He think he wants to kill him, but we know he wants to screw him, and then maybe kill him. Because in our own private canon, Itachi has more to atone for besides murder. And Sasuke has more feelings for his brother besides hatred. And secretly Itachi is hoping Sasuke will one day grow strong enough to turn the tables. Who wouldn’t?

I'm so busy right now, and I don't know why. All these activities for seniors are eating up my evenings. I was supposed to get Chapter 3 of my Bleach AU up this weekend, but I failed, so sorry for those of you who are waiting. I promise you I won't leave you hanging. This coming weekend for sure.  ^^;
